Prof. Pichler – Understanding the NIRS signal (20-25 min)

• NIRS physiology: what we are really measuring and how to interpret absolute values versus trends.
• Technical considerations, limitations and potential artefacts.
• Overview of relevant clinical evidence.
• One or two clinical cases from labour & delivery, neonatal resuscitation or NICU to illustrate these principles.

Dr Sumal – Interpreting NIRS in clinical practice (20-25 min)

• Physiological considerations specific to the procedures and surgical interventions presented, particularly during bypass.
• Interpretation of NIRS trends alongside other physiological parameters and the patient's clinical condition.
• Clinical cases from cardiopulmonary bypass and intensive care, including flank/somatic NIRS.

Shared learning objectives

By the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

1. Understand the physiological principles, technical limitations and clinical evidence underlying NIRS monitoring.
2. Differentiate the clinical significance of absolute NIRS values and trends across different patient populations and monitoring sites.
